Remember when we used to think "ignoring scientists" was just movie nonsense? We were so innocent.
Don’t Look Up is an apocalyptic comedy drama film from earlier this month, December 5, 2021 (theatrical release, 24 on Netflix) that revolves around two low-level astronomers going on a world tour, warning humanity of the impending doom that is a comet skyrocketing towards planet Earth.
Because it’s a pretty fresh entry in the Netflix library, we won’t spoil it any further, but you’re more than welcome to check it out yourself as it’s a Netflix exclusive and hence it’s available in all regions around the globe.
The movie stars a number of high-profile actors, including Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Meryl Streep, supported by the likes of Jonah Hill, Ron Pearlman, Ariana Grande, Cate Blanchett, Rob Morgan, and many others.
Don’t Look Up was directed by award-winning screenwriter, director, and comedian Adam McKay, who’s best known for his work with The Other Guys (2010), Vice (2018), and The Big Short (2015) as well as his comedy partnership with Will Ferrell, together with whom he wrote Anchorman (2004) and Talladega Nights (2006).
"Are we stupid" to "We are stupid" has been my journey from 2019-present.
At least they're not smiling in front of a concentration camp. I guess.
The 2-hour and 18-minute long film has already managed to nab 7 awards and get nominated 32 times. As of this article, over 174,000 people rated the movie an average of 7.3 out of 10. And the reactions didn’t stop there as people online started discussing, joking, and memeing the heck out of it.
Some were pointing out how the movie is honestly based on reality with the government ignoring scientists and whatnot. There were select people who would really love to go meet their end at an Ariana Grande concert. Oh, and Jennifer Lawrence’s character dwelling on being charged for free snacks while waiting on the world to end is too darn relatable, according to this tweeter.
Would be really hard for anyone who's not alive in the 21st century to watch it.
We got our priorities straight alright lol. If we want to prevail, we as a race need to think longer term than our own lifetimes. I'm not having kids and even I am appalled by our current state of affairs. The Covid pandemic exemplifies this. I have no doubt when an apocalyptic event does occur, we would go through the same process of bullshittery in half-measures to ensure the economy isn't "ruined". Maybe I'm a simpleton, but if everyone is dead, the economy by all definition, is dead as well.
Others pointed out the terrible haircuts, hence the name of the movie. Yet others were surprised how many of the shots in the movie include on average three people, and that alone equates to 6-7 Oscars with 35 to 42 nominations, depending on the scene. Now all we need is the same with net worth.
Same guy, twenty years later. He just got older, straightened his s**t out, finally got a girlfriend, and miraculously, got married and had kids.
When they look sticky-dirty, but those cut cheekbones keep playing on your mind.
What are your thoughts and reactions to this movie? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Is it too relatable and realistic and gives you existential dread? Let us know in the comment section below!
I appreciated that he 100% seriously asked a suburban mom that question. Even though Kate shut him down.

This movie made me sad. All I could think about is how dire of a situation were in and nobody can do anything about it bc the rich and the gross politicians have brainwashed half the world into thinking it's not real and they truly do only care about their money in the their lifetime be damned everyone else it's not their problem. I don't want my daughter to have kids bc I'm afraid the pain she'll go through watching them suffer bc of climate change, mass migration, wars over water, all animals and bugs and vegetation dying. We really are living in that movie idiocracy w all the conspiracy theorists and anti vaxxers flat earthers climate change deniers, no education, no money no jobs. It's actually depressing and quite terrifying especially when you factor in idiots worshipping people like trump.
This movie gave me the funniest nightmares. That's how the world ends, with stupid.
And Brontorocs...
Literally flying in the face of the idiom ‘survival of the fittest’ bc you don’t have to be strong, smart, educated or capable of using your opposable thumbs to sit in the dark on a computer ‘researching’. You are right, it ends with stupid because of the internet. One Billion Percent. How else would the morons communicate, band together and push global destruction if not for the ability to remain anonymous and spread incendiary lies for the rush of ‘belonging’ it gives them.
@K Witmer: I couldn't have said it better. FYI, my son says he's not going to have kids due to this mess we're in. (He's 32 and pretty sure of his decision.) I completely understand. But it breaks my heart for him and me that this it's come to this. Our line ending, I am an evolutionary deadend due to greedy people. It's unbelievable to me that someone would put the entire species in jeopardy, not to mention thousands of other species just for greed. There were never more evil people since the planet was made than those that fight against addressing climate change.
Marnie I completely understand. My heart goes out to you. It is very heartbreaking. My daughter is 19 and she feels like she has absolutely nothing to look forward to. 4 yrs of high school w a trump presidency and a pandemic she can't see any silver lining. I feel so horrible for the young people that try so hard and still can't do anything to make the world better for themselves
I don't know where you live, but I live in Western Europe. I'm lucky, we will be protected by the worst of it all by the wealth of our nations. Don't stress about your grandkids, unless you live in Africe, Asia, or S America. Then yea, it''l be pretty bad.
You trolling? Have you been dropped on your head when you were little? "My half of the boat isn't sinking."
It wasn't trolling, it was a bad attempt at tongue in cheek truth. The reality is that most people in the West emit multple times the amount of carbon of the poorest in the world, and yet we will be protected from the worst of the effects of climate change, while they will suffer terribly in 10-20 years time. But we will then purchase an electric car and pretend we are doing our bit, while still emitting twice the carbon of the average earth inhabitant, because we have a house to decorate with pretty things.
Sorry Xeno, didn't get the tone. Sometimes it's hard with writing. Here I saw used /s at the end of the comment for sarcasm when people want to make sure the tone reads properly. I upvoted, see if you want to edit to add the /s.
Definitely a troll. By the loosest definition, because they suck at it 🙂
I'm in Delaware in the US. No one is coming out of climate change unscathed no matter where you live. Water will be currency. Animals vegetation bees will go extinct it will happen where you live too.
K. Witmer, I find it terrifying and I think famine will also cause war. Climate change is one of my biggest triggers.
😂🤣. So the fires, tornadoes, volcanoes, hurricanes, cyclones, flooding, sinkholes and tsunami‘s can be ‘stopped’ by bricks of gold? Wads of cash? Piles of diamonds? Thank God the stupid is spread around. For a sec there, thought it was just Americans. Thanks Xeno! Needed that laugh!
I agree with Neil deGrasse Tyson. This isn't a satire. It's a documentary. It's exactly how things will go when (not if) we encounter an extinction event.
This is how we deal with climate change
It was an amazing movie. Both terrifying and hilarious. The ending really got me though!
When I sent it to my friends I included, "Stay through all the credits."
is there a post credits scene? did I miss that?
There are several post credit scenes.
